Newcastle see off Blackburn with Joselu and Ayoze Pérez extra-time flourish

15-01-2019

Rafael Benítez’s words and deeds give the distinct impression the FA Cup is a competition he can do without. Newcastle’s commitment to victory at Blackburn confirmed otherwise. The Premier League strugglers overcame the loss of a two-goal cushion and untimely injuries to secure their place in round four with a spirited win at Ewood Park.Newcastle were taken to extra time by Tony Mowbray’s determined outfit – an exertion Benítez could also have done without – after Adam Armstrong and Darragh Lenihan cancelled out the visitors’ early advantage. They were made to fight to the last for a home tie against Watford but, despite the setbacks and an obstinate opponent, extra-time goals from Joselu and Ayoze Pérez brought welcome respite. NFL kicking woes, Ellyse Perry's brilliance and Leo Messi's perfect pass | Classic YouTube

Also featuring Australian Open memories, Sébastien Loeb at the Dakar Rally and the joy of drones in sport1) Cody Parkey was left feeling like the loneliest man in the world after watching his last-gasp potentially game-winning field goal bounce off the upright and crossbar in the Chicago Bears’ playoff defeat by the Philadelphia Eagles (keep an eye on the mascot in the background, too). Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised by Parkey’s supposed misfortune. He has a knack when it comes to finding the woodwork. Here he is clattering the goal-frame four times from four kicks in a match last November. And here are those doinks immortalised in Tecmo Super Bowl. Parkey still has some way to go before he matches this single rugby union penalty, though. It boinged off the crossbar and post a full four times! Over to you Cody.2) The Australian Open kicks off on Monday and, as always, Roger Federer is among the favourites. Here’s his emotional journey to winning a 20th grand slam title in Melbourne last year, when Caroline Wozniacki finally won her first. Her ding-dong battle with Simona Halep was one of the matches of the year. There have been countless classic matches down the years but here are some of the best: Chris Evert Lloyd v Martina Navratilova in 1982, Boris Becker v Omar Camporese in 1991, Jennifer Capriati v Martina Hingis in 2002, Andy Roddick v Younes El Aynaoui in 2003 and Marat Safin v Roger Federer in 2005. And will Bernard Tomic have the chutzpah to try this bizarre underarm serve against an opponent at Melbourne Park? We hope so. Continue reading...

The Fiver | Cech, mate

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!Unlike say, a certain couple of Fulham players, it is difficult to imagine Petr Cech ever clashing with a teammate during a yoga class. While it is easy to imagine the Arsenal keeper trying somebody’s nerves by complimenting them excessively on their Downward Facing Dog, repeatedly offering them drinks from his water bottle or accidentally treading on their velvet slings, the prospect of actually coming to blows with one of football’s nicest men in any environment seems so implausible as to be utterly beyond the realms of possibility. Google “Petr Cech” and “controversy” and one of very few occasions in which the 36-year-old appears to have lost his cool in a senior career spanning almost 20 years was when he cut loose at the end of a game and gave referee Mike Dean both barrels. Which doesn’t really count because it was referee Mike Dean, a fabled attention-seeker who probably deserved both barrels. Continue reading...
